NETTIE GENTEMPO
My name is Nettie Gentempo.  I am a New England based modern-day hula hoop artist, hoop/dance instructor, choreographer, children's author, homeschooling mother, and the artistic director of the Nevaeh Dance Circus.

For over a decade hula hooping as brought me so much happiness and joy. As a result, I’ve spent countless hours transforming this recreational  activity into an art form and career.  Â

I hold the (unofficial) World Record for the most consecutive days of hula hooping in a row, at 730 days! Â (January 1st, 2021 - December 31st, 2022) for a total of two full years hula hooping every single day!

Under the hashtag #hulahoopingeverydamnday, I committed myself to this daily practice sharing glimpses of the journey on my social media account @hoopwithnettieloopsÂ

My performances are not just about hoop tricks; they're about creating a visual and emotional connection with my audience. I use the hula hoop as an extension of myself in my choreographed pieces. My approach to hula hooping goes beyond traditional techniques. I incorporate a variety of styles into my performances. Whether I’m using a single hoop, multiple hoops, or LED-lit hoops, I always bring an element of theater and dance to my work. My performances often blend fluid, dance-like movements with technical hoop tricks, creating a visually captivating experience for the audience that allows me to explore a wide range of emotions and themes. Whether I'm performing as part of a larger circus production or as a soloist, my work always aims to be dynamic and captivating.

I've had the privilege of working with some incredible artists and groups over the years including Mike Girard’s Big Swinging Thing (led by the frontman of Boston’s legendary band The Fools), Native American musician Firefly, and Fred Garbo’s Inflatable Theater Company.Â

In addition to my work as a performance artist, I am also a hoop instructor, teaching students of all levels. Through my workshops, private lessons, and group classes, I help people develop their skills and discover the joy of hooping. Whether you're just starting out or looking to refine your technique, I can help others on their hoop journey to  achieve their goals and find their own creative expression through movement.
